UX Job Market Update: September 2026, US Heat Score at 93

September 2026 Heat Score: 93 — Hot

The US UX job market scored 93 out of 100 in September 2026, earning a Hot market state — the highest reading since Academy began tracking this index. With 67,069 total job postings across five tracked design and product categories — up 18.7% from August — the market is surging. Layoffs rose modestly to 6,947 but remain well below the 2026 monthly average, and the ratio of new postings to layoffs is the strongest we’ve seen.

Role-by-Role Breakdown

  • Product Design: 21,035 postings (+21.3% MoM)
  • Product Management: 40,916 postings (+18.5% MoM)
  • Design Engineering: 2,977 postings (−3.8% MoM)
  • UX Research: 965 postings (+28.3% MoM)
  • Design Operations: 1,176 postings (+52.5% MoM)

September’s market tells a story of broad-based recovery. Product Design surged 21.3%, its largest single-month gain in 2026, while Product Management crossed 40,000 postings for the first time this year. Design Operations posted a remarkable 52.5% month-over-month jump — the strongest signal yet that companies are investing in scaling and operationalizing their design functions, not just individual contributors.

UX Research reversed its multi-month slide with a 28.3% rebound, suggesting the earlier contraction may have bottomed out. Design Engineering dipped slightly (−3.8%) after a strong August, but remains elevated well above its February baseline.

Remote listings held steady at 32.5% of total postings (21,770 remote vs. 45,299 hybrid/onsite), consistent with the market’s new equilibrium. The key takeaway: hiring teams are expanding headcount across nearly every design and product discipline simultaneously — a pattern that hasn’t occurred since early 2022.

Layoffs

Tech layoffs totaled 6,947 in September — up from August’s unusually low 3,485 but still below the 2026 monthly average of ~10,500. Notable companies that trimmed headcount:

  • Uber — 3,300
  • Oracle — 546
  • Wonder — 533
  • Microsoft/Xbox — 500
  • ServiceNow — 287
  • Apple — 200

Uber’s 3,300-person restructuring accounted for nearly half of September’s total. Outside of that single event, the month was remarkably quiet — the lowest non-Uber layoff figure in over a year.
